February 24, 2009 · Updated 12:45 PM
Justin Roche, Executive Director of Homes for Islanders (HFI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, announced the award of $1.88 million in funding for eight new homes on Orcas Island for very low and low income families utilizing the self help construction program.
The funding sources include USDA-RD, Housing Trust Fund (CTED WA), Home$tart (FHLB), San Juan County, Community Frameworks, and Homes for Islanders.
Interested applicants may contact HFI at 370-5944 for pre-application forms (pre-applications are also available at website
www.homesforislanders.org). This development is scheduled to begin early in the third quarter of 2009.
The self help program requires no down payment, good credit scores, and willingness to work to establish equity in a new home; this equity is sometimes referred to as “sweat equity.”
Contact Homes for Islanders at 370-5944 or email info@homesforislanders.org for more information.
