January 19, 2009 · Updated 8:17 PM
Phyllis Wilkinson was named Orcas Island Animal Protection Society’s 2008 Volunteer of the Year. She is part of the society's bookkeeping team and has been volunteering at the shelter since 1993.
“Prior to retirement, Wilkinson served as secretary/treasurer of a corporation, so she brought incredible skills to our small non-profit organization,” according to shelter staff.
“She now works with the team keeping track of every purchase and expense, doing cash flow projections, helping with the annual budget, and producing the monthly balance sheet and profit and loss statements.”
Carole Speight started volunteering two years ago. She is credited with helping the nonprofit with the intricacies of the Quickbooks program. The rest of the bookkeeping team includes former Orcas APS treasurer Debra Nichols and newly elected treasurer Cheryl Kummer.
