The Orcas Island School District and the Orcas Island Prevention Partnership will hold a joint meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the school library to “look for a solution to issues of supervision and maintenance at the skatepark,” said OISD Superintendent and High School Principal Barbara Kline.
At an OISD Board meeting in September, concerns that adult behavior at the skatepark, including smoking, public consumption of alcohol and littering, were in violation of OISD rules and creating an unhealthy atmosphere for local youngsters who make use of the park.
OISD maintenance manager David Mierau said also that the costs of maintaining the skatepark are considerable.
Kline said, “It is a great facility, and there’s got to be ways that it can work – the school district is happy to cooperate.”
“But we are not going to take teachers’ salaries for upkeep of the skatepark – that’s not fair,” said Kline. “And we can’t allow illegal activities on school property.”
“I’m sure it can be worked out,” said Kline.
