Maud’s Used Books: the New Kid on the Block

Maud’s Used Books on Lopez opened on July 3, right before the Fourth of July, and co-owner Michelle McDarmont could not have been more pleased.

“Our foot traffic was amazing,” McDarmont said. “Since we’re right next door to Isabel’s Espresso we have lots of people coming through, browsing, chatting about what books they’ve read, or commenting on the wide variety of titles that we have available here. I am a customer service gal and I also really enjoy interacting with people.”

With titles that range from a selection of Native American topics to a wide variety of books on spirituality, they also have a broad range of mystery, science fiction/fantasy, contemporary fiction, trade paperbacks, and young adult fantasy. Maud’s is also a dog-friendly shop.

Long-time partners Audrey Swanberg and McDarmont combined letters from their first names to create the name of the shop.

“Audrey is the odd part of Maud,” McDarmont quipped.

Swanberg has worked in used bookstores for a number of years and knows the ropes.

“We love ordering books for people and will work with them to get the titles they want, whether it’s a new release or a used book we have to hunt for,” McDarmont said. “We can get books for people, depending upon the circumstances, between three and 14 days.”

Maud’s Used Books and Groovy Gifts also carries gifts that are environmentally friendly as well as fun and kooky items.
